Checked out four cars today all as per photo surely this cannot be correct

That looks about right. See why they are called hangers?

Apparently the problem I have is normal foe Ej ans eh, I looked under 5 cars at a recent show and all were the same, with the leaf Spring shackle end hard up against the chassis rail.
Not overly pleased to find this and I may still reset my springs to stretch them so they actually hang and swivel rear wards without hitting the chassis.

yes that's the correct way the springs sit, if your springs are set correctly then it wont hit the body as even when fully flat the eye end wont reach that far if you flip them over in a lot of cases when you go for a drive they will simply pop back, as far as I know all early holdens are the same, certainly FX and FJ are
