"Barn Find" kind of...New Project

by crhoward99 » Sun Jan 20, 2019 10:12 am

Hi
I have just yesterday pulled out of my recently deceased father in laws garage this 1964 EH.
From what i know it was purchased new by his father and handed down to him and was driven as a daily driver until the year 2000 when it was parked in his garage and never started or driven again.
I know it is a 179 manual special based on the plate.
I am keen to restore the car. I know about cars but not alot about EH's. I have researched all that i can and i think i have a reasonable idea of value. We have had numerous people tell us how rare this car is and that it was one off the last ones produced. I don't know if they know what they are talking about or not.
Other than the car being a 179 special manual is there anything else i need to look at on the car.
Any idea on current value? It does seem to have rust in the drivers side door and rear door skin as can be seen in photos and the paintwork has some pitted surface rust but other than that it looks very straight and tidy...i have not investigated too far as i havent had the time...
Thanks
Chris

Interesting. I'm assuming its the 27401M number that has them excited.

From what I understand, the body numbers started at each plant (Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney) at 1, and the number can be 1 to 5 digits (yours has 5 digits). This would mean your EH body was the 27,401st manual special sedan body shell to roll off the Melbourne line.

I'm not sure of the number of manual special sedans built though (suspect Dr Terry would). Bear in mind that they made 256,959 EHs in total.

Cheers,
Harv

Thanks Harv,

Yes I think they were excited by the 5 numbers which he suggested made it one of the last ones produced.

Either way I am going to restore it.

Do you know if there is a master list (database) or any way of obtaining information from VICRoads or other about the cars history.

Some of the state rego authorities will release previous ownership details, others will not. Best to contact VicRoads and ask.

A few years ago there would have been quite a few blokes on this forum who could have given you a good idea of the car's background/build date based on the numbers. Forum politics however mean that many of those guys have since either left the forum, moved to FaceBook or retracted back into various car clubs.

One bloke that may be able to help is Terry Bebbington.

You could try contacting him by the FE/FC forum (http://forum.fefcholden.club/, username Dr_Terry), or the FB/EK forum (http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/index.php, username Dr Terry), or the FX/FJ forum (https://www.fxfjholden.com/forums/index ... 564ac89a78, username Dr Terry). An easier way is to call him directly (contact details are here: http://bebco.com.au/contact-us.html). Either way, please send him my regards and let us know what you find out.

Cheers,
Harv

G’day Chris,
Nice straight looking car which will be a very rewarding restoration project.

I can see from the numbers that it is a manual bodied car at of the Melbourne plant. The number is high enough to suggest it was well along in the production run. Did you get on to Dr Terry to throw any further light on this?

I am curious as to how the 179 engine size is obtained. Being more in to the earlier cars myself I haven’t come across this before. I’m not sure when they started using the additional tag which is just a single number. This may be the source of the engine size. Can anyone educate me?

P.S. Haven’t been on here for a while as I can’t seem to access via Tapatalk any more.

Cheers
